Environmental Scientist II
Wildlands Engineering, Inc. is seeking a motivated individual to join our team! Duties of the Environmental Scientist will include performing stream, riparian buffer, and wetland ecological assessments, geomorphic data collection, wetland delineations, endangered and threatened species surveys, vegetation inventories, and compiling environmental permit applications and technical reports. This position will also support Wildlands’ Buffer and Nutrient Offset Program through the review of baseline and annual monitoring reports, tracking of report schedules, training of other staff, and coordination with regulatory agencies. The Environmental Scientist’s role will involve both field and office work and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for monitoring and documenting site conditions and working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.

The Jim Gracie Memorial Scholarship for 2024 is open to all students pursuing degrees or training in fields promoting natural resource preservation, stream restoration, and the environmental sciences.  Preference will be given to those with diverse perspectives residing in Maryland and Virginia. Applicants should be able to show and demonstrate their passion for nature and the natural environment and should be enrolled in a degree-seeking program or training program for these fields. The successful applicant should be able to articulate in their application how they connect with the environment, how their passion and study aligns with the values exhibited by Jim, and how receiving a scholarship award will help in achieving their academic and career goals.

Environmental Coordinator
This engineering-related leadership position within Mecklenburg County’s Water Quality Program serves as the technical stream morphology expert for Water Quality’s Stream Restoration Ranking System (SRRS).  Position requires advanced knowledge of stream hydraulics, hydrologic processes, and Natural Channel Design principles. Position requires a strong understanding of land surveying techniques (differential leveling, GPS) and the ability to learn and understand hydrology/hydraulic software such as: HEC-RAS, RiverMORPH, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD. Position requires basic understanding of engineering design plans for stream restoration projects. Dependent on qualifications, position may support Engineering/Mitigation Program with in-house design efforts for stream channel site repair(s).

The advertised position is a full-time, in office position but other arrangements may be considered. Projects may include stream and wetland restoration; watershed and water quality improvements; dam removal and aquatic organism passage; hydrologic and hydraulic modeling; flood resiliency planning and design; and watershed planning and retrofit stormwater best management practices (BMPs). This position may require occasional overnight travel and frequent outdoor fieldwork.

This position will involve managing and leading projects with complex ecosystem restoration designs through the assessment, design, permitting, construction, and post-construction monitoring phases. Projects may include streams and wetland restoration; watershed and water quality improvements; dam removal and aquatic organism passage; hydrologic and hydraulic modeling; flood resiliency planning and design; and watershed planning and retrofit stormwater best management practices (BMPs). This is an important position that will be charged with major client management, leading design philosophy, overseeing project budgets and schedules, and working with in-house construction team as well as outside contractors on major project implementation.
