HEC-RAS Ras Mapper 2D modeling - Reducing uncertainty in an uncertain world: Revisiting the Broad Creek Stream Restoration

HEC-RAS, a robust software provided by the Army Corps of Engineers, has undergone significant transformations since its inception in 1995, reshaping the way we model rivers. In 2016, a milestone was achieved with the introduction of two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic modeling, representing a substantial advance in our understanding of river hydraulics.

This discussion builds upon our 2017 presentation that delved deep into the intricacies of HEC-RAS 2D modeling at the advent of 2D modeling. We explored how to finesse your models for accurately simulating stream structures and proposed designs, conducting in-depth analyses of shear stresses and velocity vectors across the project canvas. These insights proved invaluable in the pursuit of stability for constructed streams.

Fast forward six years to the present, and our once-theoretical project is now a tangible reality. The Broad Creek Stream/Wetland Complex project was constructed in 2022. We are now able to observe water flow on the floodplain as well as installed structures.  We are poised to scrutinize how HEC-RAS's predictive capabilities align with what we see in nature. In this discussion, we will assess the resonance between our model's predictions and the actual performance in the field, shedding light on the impact and efficacy of this effective tool.

 

About Liz DiNatale, PE
Liz is a senior stormwater engineer with Gannett Fleming and has over 16 years of experience in water resources, stormwater and stream restoration projects. Liz’s focus has primarily been in natural stream hydraulics, including H&H models for FEMA DFIRMs, LOMRs, NCDOT bridge and culvert replacements and permit compliance. Liz has attended all 4 levels of Rosgen’s courses and spent 2.5 years as a construction project manager, managing the construction of thousands of linear feet of streams in Richmond, Spartanburg, Knoxville and Greensboro. She's performed stream restoration construction administration at mitigation sites as well as dam removal projects. Liz's stormwater projects have included watershed master planning, stormwater control measures and designing urban stream restorations. Liz is licensed in NC, TN, GA and SC and is an NRCS Technical Service Provider.
